Duckering Network Outage 5/5/2022

Problem Impact Analysis

Event Occurrence: 5/5/2022 3:10 PM AKST - 5/5/2022 5:45 AKST

Background

Network Devices serving the Duckering Building 4th floor including Phones, Wired and Wireless reportedly had no connectivity.

Break Down of the Problem

We received reports of no network on part of the 4th floor of Duckering on 5/5/22. I noticed that the fiber optic trunk ports were in a not connected state. I confirmed that the far end of that link on the first floor was operating as expected and then performed a power cycle on the 4th floor switch stack. After the stack rebooted the trunk ports returned to operational state and the switch stack began functioning as expected again. However after about 15 minutes the connections went down again. After rebooting the switches a 2nd time I stayed with the switch to watch the interfaces which went down after ~15 minutes again. This time I removed the fiber module and inserted it into a different switch in the stack and configured the interfaces to carry the uplink traffic. I stayed with the switches to see if the problem presented its self again, which it did not. At this point it was ~6pm and I went offsite.

Target State / Goal

Network equipment should remain up 24/7 unless some outside event occurs.
