Work: This migration work will start the process to move all of our v.2 platform (based on LXD v.2.x containers) VPS customers to our new LXD v.3.x based servers in the US - Central data center only.
Reason for Downtime: Unfortunately a weakness in LXD v.2 (and many virtualization technology) is that moving between processor types (Intel <> AMD) or even newer/older processes from the same vendor is not possible with VPS servers running. This will cause a period of downtime, depending on the amount of data a given client has stored in their specific VPS server.
Result of work: Outside of the obvious benefits of moving to newer versions of any software product or operating system one of the big benefits for us to move customer VPS servers over to LXD v.3 is the overall removal of the issue of downtime when moving a running VPS between CPU types. LXD v.3 does this in an innovative way, by leveraging abilities of the ZFS file system, LXD v.3 will move all but the last few percentage of data in a VPS server, at the last minute LXD v.3 will shutdown the VPS server being moved, move that last bit of data written when the OS was shut down, and start the VPS server up on the new physical server. This lowers downtime from minutes or 10's of minutes of downtime for a migration to 1 to 2 seconds, regardless of the amount of data the file system of a VPS server contains. This obviously has great benefits for everything from day to day scaling of a customer's VPS server that may need to be moved to a different physical server to handle a VPS plan size upgrade, to both scheduled and emergency hardware maintenance.
